SUICIDE from, sui-oneself and cidium-killing. The taking of one’s life. Nigeria records 9.9 per 100,000 populace, which earn her 10th suicide inclined nation in Africa, 67th on the global chart. The first half of the year saw a prevalence in suicidal cases with front pages of newspapers, journal columns and social media trend filled with suicide, depression and psychological health issues.

What is this conviction? Is it a fleeting trend alluring to youths or would we say we are double-dealing and uninformed blaming weakness and psychological well-being of the individuals who chose it?

The aphorism of death petrifies, and it inevitability keeps Us in check. Be that as it may, according to World Health Organisation, WHO, 800,000 people grasp this taboo way out yearly. Specialist, contented that the suicide rate is not higher in Nigeria, but only gained increased attention and coverages.

Each attempt, successful or not, evokes anguished emotions among cozy relationship questioning what they may have missed and prejudicial reactions among the populaces. A section offering sympathy, some assailing the choice, faulting cowardice, citing scriptures on reverence of life and few hardly inquiring why.

Pause for a minute, envision being caught in a tall structure ablaze, what might be your choice? Take the hop? Hurried to the fire? Or on the other hand allow to be devoured? American writer David Foster Wallace clarified:

The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e., the fear of falling remains a constant…

Suicide results from depression which is a secondary manifestation of fundamental life stresses; abrupt life shift, financial problems, relationship break-up, misery e.tc.

So a psychotically depressed individual doesn’t end it all in view of conviction that demise is presently enchanting yet does in comparable we way would impulsively hop off a blazing structure, when the flames(problems) winds up excruciating to be handled or solved. The lesser evil.

Our hypocrisy is evident from uproars for depressed individuals to speak out which mostly fails to address the primary cause(s), glibly expressing sympathy-feel, instead of empathy-understanding why.

You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.-David Follace.

Suicide brings end to the problem for the person in question. To close relations, perhaps not.

They said you came looking for me.
I did not drown; I was the water.’
Where do atheists go to when they die?
Lol. Amen.
